Teaching Philosophy

Transcript:  The Education world has provided us with many teaching methods. My Teaching philosophy is called Principled Eclecticism. I have picked from the various methods to develop something that matches my philosophy. I will discuss three methods. 1) Communicative Language Teaching (CLT). The core of my philosophy is focused on communication. Communication practice includes things like classroom socialization and attending Deaf events. One example of my approach in the classroom is Comprehensible Input (CI). This includes utilizing visual aids and modeling the language in context myself. I make a point to remain at 90% in the target language. There is only English available in the room to display daily objectives for the students. In the classroom students work in pairs or small groups. The teacher is not meant to be ‘Sage on the Stage’, but rather, walking around the classroom and supporting students negotiating the language. 2) Notional-Functional Syllabus (NFS). While similar to CLT, they are not the same. From NFS, I use AP themes such as travel, health and education. The feature they share is requiring extra-class practice activities like Deaf events. 3) Competency Based Language Teaching (CBLT). The way I wish to apply CBLT is utilizing the backward design approach.  Beginning with Level 4, I will design the ‘End of Program’ curriculum with the goals and outcomes perfected. Then push the students beginning from Level 1 toward that goal. I will be focusing on student outcomes in the following way: By utilizing portfolios of student expressions, students can show their progress over time. With solid proof of improvement students can take ownership of their language journey. Overall, my teaching philosophy focuses on communication skills. Students can feel confident when interacting with the Deaf community.
